Thank you so much for your support with our two events this week, starting with the Club's Kick Off Social and concluding with the Mayasich Cup.  Because of your generous donations to the Robby Mayasich Memorial Scholarship Fund--along with others, including the Chaparral coaches, who donated $200, and the referees' association, which donated $250--we were able to give Brophy $2,150 toward the scholarship.  See Dan Mayasich's comments below:

Lisa and all,

Wow…that’s so nice.  MUCH appreciated!  I know I speak for Landis, Danny and Frances too when I say how much all of this means to us.  We try our best to go about our life day to day and keep Robby sort of tucked away in this special place, where we think of him and remember him, but in a way that allows us to function at the same time.  That delicate balance always gets thrown off a bit as we approach the end February and leading up to March 2nd.  The fact that this special event comes about just as so much sadness begins to set in for us, lifts us up in a way that truly helps carry us through the rest of the week.  THANK YOU for that!  And I’m certain that Robby smiles down on all of you with such gratitude for keeping his memory and sprit so alive at the school and in the sport he loved so much.

As for tonight, yes, we’ll be there with some family/friends and will be happy to join Father Reese for the pre-game plans.

Much love,

Dan

Coming up in the next week:
1.  Monday, Feb. 27:  Congratulations to both JV 1 and Brophy 1 for their first victory of the season over Chaparral.
2.  Thursday, March 1:  Brophy 1 (8:00 PM) and JV 1 (6:00 PM) vs. Desert Vista at BSC.  Please park at Brophy and walk to the Sports Campus.  No parking at Xavier.
3.  Friday, March 2:  Brophy 2 (6:00 PM) away at Desert Vista location--Pecos Park
4.  Friday, March 2:  We welcome Lawrenceville to town.  Host families, you should have received an email from Nick Firestone with detailed instructions.  If you did not receive the email, please contact him.
5.  Tuesday, March 6:
Brophy 1 vs. Lawrenceville at BSC at 6:30 PM Turf Field
JV 2 vs. Pinnacle at BSC at 6:00 PM - Grass Field
Brophy 2 vs. Pinnacle at BSC at 8:00 PM - Turf Field

Please note that the calendar now lists the name of the school or park of the away games.  Please look at the field location tab on our website for directions to these fields.

Congratulations to Brophy Lacrosse on a very successful first ever lacrosse tournament at the Brophy Sports Complex!  It was a beautiful day with a high level of lacrosse played by all the teams.  Special thanks to Brad Grannis and Kim Churchill for making sure all the details were covered.  Brophy was the only undefeated team in the 7-team tournament, going 3-0 against very good competition from British Columbia and Nevada.  Day two of the tournament is tomorrow with an 8-team JV tournament.

The Brophy Lacrosse calendar is now set.  Please refer to it for all game and practice times.  An email will be sent if any entries are changed in the future.  The calendar has been updated so don’t rely on a previous viewing.  Details such as times and locations can be found by clicking on the day on the calendar.

Coming up in the next week:

1.     Monday, Feb. 20:  Day 2 of the 1st Annual Brophy Broncos’ Presidents’ Weekend Tournament.

2.     Friday, Feb. 24:  Coaches vs. Brophy 1 at 7:00 PM at BSC.

3.     Sunday, Feb. 26:  The club’s annual season Kick-Off Social for coaches, players and their families:  4-6 PM, food and refreshments, a lacrosse 101 session for those parents who are new to the game, great raffle items, and an opportunity to meet other families on your son’s team.  Suggested donation of $25 per adult.  This will be the club’s only fundraiser.  An email invitation will be sent later this week.  Thank you to the Ghelfi and Hushek families for underwriting this event.

4.     Monday, Feb. 27:  The start of the regular season with the 3rd Annual Mayasich Cup at BSC.  Brophy 1 vs. Chaparral at 8:00 PM and Brophy JV 1 vs. Chaparral at 6:00 PM.  This Cup was established in 2010 to honor the memory of Brophy Lacrosse senior Robby Mayasich who tragically died in an accident at the start of the 2010 lacrosse season.  His passing touched many people including the Chaparral players that Robby learned the game with.  Donations for the Robby Mayasich Memorial Scholarship Fund at Brophy will be accepted at the game.  Each donation will be acknowledged with a Robby bracelet.  There will also be a limited number of Robby socks available for a $20 donation.

2012 Boys' West Region Preview

January 23, 2012-Message from Head Coach Pich

As tryouts for the 2012 Brophy Lacrosse program approach, here are a couple of reminders, as well as a couple of changes to our tryout routine.

1)   Jersey – All returning players are required to wear their reversible from last year.  We will have spreadsheets for tryouts and numbers will be crucial in your evaluation so please make sure you have your jersey from last year.  For all new players, we will have a reversible you can borrow if you do not have one.  All players must check-in at the registration table as you enter Loyola Field on the first day of Varsity and JV tryouts.  Check in will begin at 2:45 PM.  Registration will close at 3:15 PM.

Merchandise - If you did not pick up you Team Gear or socks, if you ordered extras, they will be available for pick up at the registration table.

2)   Water – Please make sure you have your own water.  We will have a water fountain close by, but our water breaks will be timed so players are encouraged to bring their own water.

3)   Running Shoes - Players are required to have running shoes with them for the duration of the tryouts.  On any given day, we expect players to be ready for our one-mile, two-mile, and three-mile timed runs.

4)   Sticks – Please make sure your stick is working properly.  It is not a good sign if players are still adjusting their sticks during the first couple days of tryouts.  Be ready to go!

5)   Attitude – We are looking forward to working with players who have a great attitude, who are coachable, who want to learn and improve.  With the high demand for roster spots in our program, we can afford to be selective when it comes to attitude.

With just under 150 players registered to try-out for our lacrosse program, we will be changing our tryout format and our criteria for grading players.  We have created a formula based on attitude, hustle, strength index, timed runs, stick-skills, and physicality.  These results will allow us to rank players and aid in our team selection.  Please know we are not basing our decisions solely on these results, but they will aid us in our overall evaluations.

With regards to our tryout, and so everyone is aware, there will be minimal instruction, as we are simply evaluating our players and seeing what they know thus far.  If a player makes a mistake it is not the end of the world, and in fact it’s more important for us to see what a player does after he makes a mistake.  Does he put his head down or does he work hard to get that mistake back and does he not make that mistake again?

A couple of tips:

Be ready to go.

Do not speak when a coach is speaking.

Hustle throughout the entire tryout.

Leave it all on the field.

We will see Varsity players on Wednesday and JV players on Monday.  Good luck to everyone. It's going to be a great season!!!

Coach Beau Pich

3.  Please go to the Practice Schedule tab for the first two weeks of practice.  Week two will be representative of the practice times for the season.

4.  Please note that all teams have a tournament or practice over the President's Day weekend.

5.  Player/Parent Registration Night is on Wednesday, Feb. 9 in the Great Hall.  Please bring your checkbook.  You will need separate checks for your club dues, uniform deposit, team wear merchandise and spirit wear merchandise.

  • Varsity will have two days to tryouts before we begin to select players for each team.  Varsity tryouts will continue for another four days before our final rosters are selected.
  • If a Freshman/Sophomore player is not ready for Varsity caliber lacrosse, he will be told to return for JV (Junior Varsity Team) /FS (Freshman Sophomore Team) tryouts.

Practice:

  • Tryouts and practice begin promptly at their designated times!
  • Tryouts will be two hours long unless otherwise noted.
  • Players are in charge of bringing their own water.
  • Players are required to bring all their own equipment, so please make sure you have everything in order.
  • Once you have made a team, you will be given a penny with your number and a pair of shorts.  You may wear any gray shirt under your penny.  The practice uniforms will be distributed the second week of practice.  All players must wear their practice uniforms for practice.
  • Practice will consist of stick-work, offensive and defensive drills and conditioning.
  • The school is very supportive of our programs and has provided us with fields.  There is a great demand for fields the week of tryouts and the first two weeks of practice because Brophy and Xavier Soccer are finishing their seasons, Track and Field is starting their season, and Lacrosse has four teams.  Please be patient for the practice schedule and we ask for your indulgence when we have to change something at the last moment.

Overview

  • Tryouts allow us to evaluate a player’s attitude, athleticism and skill, stick skills, lacrosse IQ, etc.
  • We won’t be doing much instruction, if at all.  Again we are here to evaluate players.  As you have heard us say before... prove yourself.
  • We have added a 4th team to help to alleviate cuts, but we reserve the right to cut.
  • The most important thing for this program is attitude.  We want players with the right attitude!
